2011/2012 YCC Application.

Dear Friends,

Thank you for your interest in the Springville Youth City Council Organization.  The mission of this organization is simple:
“To offer opportunities for area teens to gain a greater understanding and appreciation of their community, its citizens, and it’s elected officials, through service and interaction.”

We accomplish this mission in a variety of ways.  We are heavily involved with local service organizations, city departments, city celebration days, the library, national organizations such as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the Utah Food Bank, etc…  I have attached a document entitled YCC Year in Review 2008 which will give you a better idea of how involved we are with others.  The calendar is not exactly the same year to year, but many of our activities have become traditions.  Some months we will be doing projects several times a week, while others we try to cut back to allow the kids to pursue other activities and catch their breath.

This is not a school club, nor is it a religious organization.  Our focus is to create great citizens.  Therefore the attendance and commitment requirements are of a standard much higher than most. The Springville Youth Council has been recognized as the top Youth City Council in the State and we have achieved this rating because of the dedication and work ethic of those serving on the Council.

I have been the advisor for the YCC for nearly eight years now. This is not a paid position. Prior to that I served as a City Council Member for four years, and prior to that I served on the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and as President for several years.  My husband and I moved to Springville in 1984 when he was hired by the Springville Police Dept.  He continues his work there as the Lieutenant.  He will assist with many of the Youth Council activities.  We feel very blessed to live in Springville and to be able to serve here.  We have raised our two children here and have tried to instill in them a desire to make a difference in the world around them.  Our daughter is married with 2 daughters and a son due in April.  She teaches mathematics, dance, and is the cheer advisor at Payson High.  Our son is married with two daughters and works as an auto mechanic in Spanish Fork.

First and foremost, I am a Mom, and a Grandma.  I care for my grandchildren most of the time during the week.  They bring me tremendous joy and I feel very fortunate that I am able to be in their lives.  My oldest granddaughter was just two when she took the “Oath of Office” during a City Council meeting.  She started serving on the Council before she was born. It’s never too early to learn about service!

I hope this introduction answers any questions or concerns you may have.  Please feel free to call me at 801-489-3455 or email kgordon@connect2.com with any questions.  I am so excited to start the new  year!  I hope you will join us if it is the right thing for you!

Sincerely
Keri Gordon
