5K and Kids Fun Run

The Live wElle Foundation will be hosting the 2nd annual “Live wElle 5K and Kids’ Fun Run” on Saturday, May 24, 2008. The event will start at 7:30 a.m., and as with last year, will be held at the Hunter Valley Park in Springville (1250 South 200 East). All proceeds from this event will benefit the Nebo Education Foundation and will continue to provide scholarships for local high school students.

The Live wElle Foundation was established in memory of Elle Hullinger, daughter of Scott and Kirsten Hullinger of Springville. Elle’s sudden death on August 30, 2006, brought an outpouring of love and support that can never be repaid! On a daily basis, we are reminded how much we miss Elle, yet Elle’s short life continues to bless her family and her community. Her foundation will always provide renewed healing as young people are assisted in reaching their potential and in their quest to “Live wElle".

The Live wElle Foundation board members invite all to come and participate in this wonderful event! More information, including directions on how to register, can be found at www.livewElle.org. And remember, “live life.live it wElle".

Springville Downtown Civic Center

Springville, Utah - Springville City is pleased to announce final, building concept plans for renovation of Springville’s downtown civic center. All current governmental functions located in the downtown area will remain. These functions include Library, Police, Fire, Court and City Hall.

The City Council has developed a phased building plan which will allow for the continuation of all government services during construction. This will result in significant cost savings to the citizens. Construction is expected to begin on the first phase early in 2008.

The first phase consists of a new, main fire station and a new civic center. For many years, the Springville City council has saved money towards facilities which will allow for the construction of the first phase without any increase in fees or taxes to pay for the facilities.

The Springville City council received recommendations from the Library Building Committee on September 18, 2007. The City Council was encouraged to seek professional and public input regarding the design of a new facility. A new library facility will also require public support for funding through bonding.

On the same evening, the City Council received a report from the Pool Ad Hoc Committee. While a recreation center or pool would not be located in the downtown civic area, the City Council continues to study recreational opportunities.

The approved concept plans contain many unique and innovative ideas which have been incorporated into the designs. These include options and ideas to lower construction costs, increase efficiency, improve customer service and reduce long term operating costs on the facilities. All designs have been planned for a community of 60,000 people. This is the expected “build-out” size of the community.

The attached fact sheet provides a visual image of the concept as well as statistics about the size and possible costs of the buildings.

Crytosporidium Outbreak Forces Swimming Restrictions

At this time, the Utah Department of Health and local health departments are restricting pool use for individuals under the age of five, or any individual who requires the use of a diaper.
At this time, the Utah County Health Department is tracking an outbreak of cryptosporidium, a parasite that causes diarrheal disease, abdominal cramping and other discomfort.

If you are concerned you or a family member have contracted this illness, please see your personal physician for testing and treatment.

While cryptosporidium is not typically life-threatening, we strongly advise individuals with any sort of weakened immune system to not swim in public pools. At this time, the Utah Department of Health and local health departments are also restricting pool use for individuals under the age of five, or any individual who requires the use of a diaper.

For details, please see the fact sheet below or visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention web site: www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dpd/parasites/cryptosporidiosis

The best protection is for individuals is to practice good hygiene. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has six suggestions to help you stay safe.

Don’t swim when you have diarrhea and for two weeks after it clears up.
Don’t swallow the pool water.
Practice good hygiene. Take a shower before swimming and wash your hands after using the toilet or changing diapers.
Take the kids on bathroom breaks or check diapers often.
Change diapers in a bathroom and not at poolside.
Wash your child thoroughly (especially the rear end) with soap and water before swimming.

Almost all Utah County pools have been affected by this outbreak. Pool operators in the county have been working very hard to help control the spread of this parasite, but it is resistant to chlorine levels.

34th Annual Quilt Show Open at Museum

The Springville Museum of Art, partnered with the Utah Valley Quilt Guild, is hosting the 34th Annual Quilt Show from 19 July - 2 September 2007. Outstanding creative talent is currently showcased by artists from all over Utah in what has been called “one of the Museum’s most popular exhibitions” by Museum staff.
Visitors are encouraged to come and experience the art of quilting firsthand at the Springville Museum of Art free of charge. The many quilts have been submitted and judged based on artistic expressions as well as quality. An awards ceremony and preview party was held on 18 July 2007 in celebration of the artists’ achievements. Honoring al the artists with a formal reception provided the opportunity for quilters to come together, and see the work of other artists from the state of Utah.
The two jurors of this year’s Quilt Show , Jody Jorgensen and Paula Devey McKinlay, are quilting experts and were responsible for critiquing and judging the variety of quilts. Quilts were critiqued on workmanship, design, color, originality, and general appeal. Awards such as “Best of Show” and “Director’s Award” were bestowed in the form of ribbons and cash prizes.
According to Museum worker Kyle Kemble, the Annual Quilt Show is an opportunity to celebrate the fine artistic qualities of the quilt. He says he is “pleased that the Museum gives space to the quilts, which has been so often neglected to the term ‘craft.”
Each quilt, created in many hours of labor and close observation, reflects in some cases a lifetime of work and love. Quilters are known for putting their hearts and souls into their quilts, as can be seen in the quilts on display at the Springville Museum of Art. Though many artists have been quilting for years, quilters of all levels participated in the show and were able to express themselves.
From first timer quilters to professionals, the Springville Museum of Art Quilt Show is an exquisite event, and something that every community member should experience. This age-old art form appreciated at the Springville Museum of Art celebrates the beauty of the quilt.
This exhibition would not be possible without the assistance of our many sponsors. Special thanks to the Cornwagon Quilting Company, the major sponsor of this year’s show. Additional thanks go to American Quilting, Fancy Stitches, Round Valley Quilting, Creekside Needlearts, Cherry Tree Cottage, and Morganson Custom Frames and Sew Forth. These sponsors have helped this event continue in its tradition of excellence.

Spanish Fork - Springville Airport Announcement

On Monday, 11 Jun 07, the airport will be closed for three days to enable completion of the crack / seal and painting project.

We need your help. We are asking all owners of aircraft parked outside hangars - including those parked in between the northern most hangars - to move your aircraft to the areas between the rows of the other hangars prior to 0800L on Monday, 11 Jun 07. Those needing to fly during this period might consider evacuating to another airport until our airport is again opened on 14 Jun 07. We are told by the contractor that the sealant cure time is 24 hours. This may allow all aircraft to be re-positioned to their normal tie-down spots on Tuesday, 12 Jun 07.

We will make every effort to get the job done as expeditiously as possible.

Obviously, the airport will be closed during this time to motor vehicle and well as aircraft traffic.

Please feel free to contact me for coordination details.

Please note that this operation is weather contingent. Should there be a weather delay, the plan is to slip the dates accordingly. We will make every attempt to keep all informed.

Springville has been named a Tree City USA

Springville has been named a Tree City USA community by the National Arbor Day Foundation to honor its commitment to community forestry. It is the twenty-eighth year Springville has received this national recognition.

The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the National Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest service.

Springville has met the four standards to become a Tree City USA community: a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program, and an Arbor Day observance.

“Trees in our cities and towns help clean the air, conserve soil and water, moderate temperature and bring nature into our daily lives,” said John Rosenow, president of the National Arbor Day Foundation. “Tree City USA designation recognizes the work of elected officials, staff and citizens who plant and care for the community forest.”

“We’re proud to have had the Tree City USA designation for 28 years.” commented Alex Roylance, Springville City Buildings & Grounds Director. “There is only one city in Utah that has been a Tree City USA for longer.” Director Roylance noted that Springville recently began a new street tree program. Over the past year, City crews have removed many hazardous street trees, removed many stumps, and have planted over 300 new street trees in our community. “Our goal is to keep our community beautiful and to serve as an example for others to follow.” Roylance said.

Springville City has designated April 14th as Spring Clean-Up Day.

Springville City has designated April 14th as Spring Clean-Up Day. Residents are encouraged to clean their yards, sweep gutters and sidewalks and do their best to improve yards and neighborhoods. Owners of vacant lots are encouraged to clear their lots of garbage, tall weeds and other debris. City leaders hope this event will promote community beautification through volunteers working together. This is a great opportunity for scout groups, church groups, and other volunteer organizations to serve in their community.

For convenience, dumpsters will be provided throughout the city on April 14th at the following parks:

  • Spring Creek Park 475 E. 600 N.
  • Memorial Park 500 E. 200 S.
  • Child Park 200 S. 1300 E.
  • Hobble Creek Park 2200 E 1250 S.
  • Big Hollow Park 350 E. 2200 S.
  • Kelvin Grove Park 1400 W. 1600 S.
  • These dumpsters can be used to dispose of household garbage, cardboard, Styrofoam, metal, dry paint, furniture, mattresses, computer towers and smoke detectors. The following items cannot be accepted at the dumpsters: hazardous waste, appliances with Freon, asphalt, bricks, rocks, concrete, oil, TV’s and computer monitors, toilets/sinks, propane tanks, antifreeze and batteries. These items must be disposed of at the South Utah Valley Solid Waste District (SUVSWD). Additional disposal fees are charged for hazardous items.

For Springville City residents, a coupon is included in the April CitySource letter for disposal of one free load at SUVSWD anytime between April 14th and 21st. All loads must be covered.

Yard waste can be disposed of at the Compost Facility located at 600 W. 600 N. This facility is open Tuesday - Saturday from 10:00 am – 6:00 pm from now through the fall season. There is also a dumpster for scrap metal at this location.

For detailed infomation please visit the Public Works page.

If you have questions about acceptable items, please refer to www.suvswd.org or call 491-2780.

Springville City Pool to Stay Open.

Springville, Utah - The Springville City Facilities and Grounds Department recently completed an analysis of all maintenance needs for Springville City facilities. The report revealed many needs for Springville’s aging facilities. Of keen interest to Springville residents was information concerning Springville’s 30 year-old indoor pool facility.

With respect to the pool, an engineering report and facility report detailed growing problems due to the age of the pool. Ventilation systems, the boiler and exterior block walls all face limited continuing life spans.

After reviewing the information, the Springville City Council expressed interest in exploring all options related to new pool facilities. In coming months, the City Council will review possible indoor and outdoor facilities. While the City Council explores these options, the existing pool facility will remain open.

City staff will continue to monitor pool function to ensure that it remains a safe and inviting place to recreate. Springville City plans to offer annual swimming lessons this summer and looks forward to continued use of the pool facility.
