Springville has been named a Tree City USA

Springville has been named a Tree City USA community by the National Arbor Day Foundation to honor its commitment to community forestry. It is the twenty-eighth year Springville has received this national recognition.

The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the National Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest service.

Springville has met the four standards to become a Tree City USA community: a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program, and an Arbor Day observance.

“Trees in our cities and towns help clean the air, conserve soil and water, moderate temperature and bring nature into our daily lives,” said John Rosenow, president of the National Arbor Day Foundation. “Tree City USA designation recognizes the work of elected officials, staff and citizens who plant and care for the community forest.”

“We’re proud to have had the Tree City USA designation for 28 years.” commented Alex Roylance, Springville City Buildings & Grounds Director. “There is only one city in Utah that has been a Tree City USA for longer.” Director Roylance noted that Springville recently began a new street tree program. Over the past year, City crews have removed many hazardous street trees, removed many stumps, and have planted over 300 new street trees in our community. “Our goal is to keep our community beautiful and to serve as an example for others to follow.” Roylance said.

Springville City has designated April 14th as Spring Clean-Up Day.

Springville City has designated April 14th as Spring Clean-Up Day. Residents are encouraged to clean their yards, sweep gutters and sidewalks and do their best to improve yards and neighborhoods. Owners of vacant lots are encouraged to clear their lots of garbage, tall weeds and other debris. City leaders hope this event will promote community beautification through volunteers working together. This is a great opportunity for scout groups, church groups, and other volunteer organizations to serve in their community.

For convenience, dumpsters will be provided throughout the city on April 14th at the following parks:

  • Spring Creek Park 475 E. 600 N.
  • Memorial Park 500 E. 200 S.
  • Child Park 200 S. 1300 E.

  • Big Hollow Park 350 E. 2200 S.
  • Kelvin Grove Park 1400 W. 1600 S.

Alan Robinson named Springville City Employee of the Year.

Springville, Utah - The fourth annual Springville City Employee Award Banquet was held February 27, 2007, honoring several employees in recognition of outstanding performance in 2006. Throughout the year employees are nominated for this special recognition. An “Employee of the Year” award for 2006 was presented by the City Administrator. A plaque in the Administration Building lists all recipients and features the picture of the current employee being recognized. Mayor Mangum and members of the City Council attended the dinner.

Employees recognized this year include Chris Bagley (Police), Allen Birch (Electric), Kami Craudell (Electric), Shirley Green (Administration/Finance), Rick Hansen (Building Inspection), Craig Norman (Golf), Shaun Orton (Buildings & Grounds), Patti Rogers (Library), Linzy Rowett (Solid Waste), and Bruce Taylor (Building Inspection).

The Employee of the Year award for 2006 was presented to Alan Robinson of Public Works. A couple of years ago Alan moved from Water Maintenance to the newly organized Waste Water Maintenance division. Alan was instrumental in getting this new division up and running. He has saved the City tens of thousands of dollars of equipment expenses by refurbishing the TV truck. With the aid of the TV truck equipment he has been able to identify multiple issues throughout the sewer system. Two contracts are already out to bid for contractors to start correcting these problems. “Alan is consistently one of our highest rated employees in Public Works,” said Administrator Fitzgerald. “He always has a smile on his face and is always willing to pitch in and go the extra mile.”
“I’ve known Alan and his wife for a number of years,” commented Mayor Mangum, “I couldn’t be happier to acknowledge the achievements of an employee with such great spirit and enthusiasm.”
