Springville City Employee Award Banquet

Springville, Utah - The second annual Springville City Employee Award Banquet was held February 16, 2005, honoring several employees in recognition of outstanding performance in 2004. Throughout the year employees are nominated for this special recognition. An “Employee of the Year” award for 2004 was presented by the City Administrator. A plaque in the Administration Building lists all recipients and features the picture of the current employee being recognized. Mayor Boyer and members of the City Council attended the dinner.

Employees recognized include Sonny Braun (Hobble Creek Golf Course), Shaun Orton (Facilities Manager), Jo Evans (City Recorder), Marcie Clark (Public Works Secretary), Hazel Dunsmore (Administration Secretary), John Gleave (Economic Development Coordinator), James Barker (Animal Control Officer), Shawn Black (Power Plant Foreman), Rick Roberts (Waste Water Treatment Plant Manager), Linda Bailie (Court Clerk).

The Employee of the Year award for 2004 was presented to Roberta “Teddy” Anderson. “Teddy is an employee who gets right down to business and quietly goes about doing her work,” said Layne Long, City Administrator. Since coming to work for the City in 1994 she has taken on countless duties and new responsibilities and has seen many changes at City Hall. Some of her responsibilities require weekend and evening hours, but Teddy never complains. Her job titles include Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce and Executive Director of the Arts Commission. She oversees Art City Days and the World Folkfest. Teddy keeps the books for the cemetery and handles all the reservations for the canyon parks. Last year when the Council requested that a live person answer the phones rather than a recorded message, Teddy took on that task too. She is often seen walking around City Hall with a headset on answering the City’s main phone line as she goes about her day-to-day business! Teddy is the “go to” person for many of the City staff because she is so knowledgeable about city business in all departments. “It is with grateful appreciation that we present these awards. We are fortunate to have such enthusiastic and dedicated employees serving the residents of Springville,” commented Mayor Boyer.

In January 2004, three newly elected members of Springville’s City Council were welcomed by other members of the Council and sworn in by Judge Dean Olsen. J. Niel Strong, Phillip Bird, and Rodney Burt were presented with orientation briefings from the City’s administrative staff and given a general overview of Springville City’s mission.

As a local government, the mission of Springville City is both stable, as it is principle based, and dynamic, as it evolves with time and change. Our current mission includes a collective and important responsibility to:

- Assure a safe, healthy, family friendly environment for business, industrial, and residential use;
- Provide public utilities and services along with recreational and cultural opportunities;
- Provide an adequate, fully qualified administrative and technical staff to serve the public, maintain existing infrastructure, and manage community resources;
- Provide open access to City government, clearly documented by traditional news releases and letters, and by electronic means;
- Involve interested citizens by providing volunteer and appointed community service opportunities on boards, commissions, and committees, etc.;
- Plan to accommodate the future and inevitable change caused by growth, development and obsolescence.

The following comments are offered as an analysis of the state of Springville City in January 2005 using the mission statement as a general outline.
