Latest News Concerning The New Library

Plans for the long-awaited new library are in full swing. City staff, architects, and community stakeholders have been working hard this past year to complete the design of building and grounds for the new facility. A request for qualifications (RFQ) has gone out to construction firms interested in building the new library. This process allows the city to review the qualifications of future bidders to ensure that we receive bids from contractors who have experience in building facilities of similar size and complexity. Work on the building will begin in early spring with a completion set for spring of 2011.

Interior spaces, based on resident feedback as to how they want to use the library, were developed early in the process. Interior designers joined the committee to refine areas and work on interior colors and furnishings.
One of our goals has been to make a strong connection with Hobble Creek and the view of the mountains. The main floor of the library will be 30,000 sq ft. which is approximately the size of the main floor of the new Civic Center. An additional 10,000 sq. ft. second floor will be on the east side of the building to house staff and volunteers and to provide for future growth.
Some of the features:

* Children’s areas on the west side adjacent to a dividable multipurpose room. Raised ceilings featuring clerestory windows allow natural light to flow into the area.

* Adult areas and comfortable seating on the east side of the library to take advantage of the morning light and views

* More computers with age delineation.

* A quiet-only computer room.

* Teens have their own area–and computers.

* 2 study rooms.

* The southeast corner of the 2nd floor set aside as a roof top garden area. At certain times of the year this will be open for residents to step outside and take a green break to read a book.

Most of the staff functions will be housed on the 2nd floor. As our community grows, expansion can take place on the remainder of the 2nd floor.
Demolition of the old Police and Fire Station is scheduled for March. The timing on this will coincide closely with new construction so that the excavation can remain open. Bids for demolition will be posted on the city’s website.

Youth City Council Applications Available Online.

Thank you for your interest in the Springville Youth City Council Organization. The mission of this organization is simple: “To offer opportunities for area teens to gain a greater understanding and appreciation of their community, its citizens, and it’s elected officials, through service and interaction.”

We accomplish this mission in a variety of ways. We are heavily involved with local service organizations, city departments, city celebration days, the library, national organizations such as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the Utah Food Bank, etc… I have attached a document entitled YCC Year in Review 2008 which will give you a better idea of how involved we are with others. The calendar is not exactly the same year to year, but many of our activities have become traditions. Some months we will be doing projects several times a week, while others we try to cut back to allow the kids to pursue other activities and catch their breath.

Springville City Offers Appliance Incentives.

Springville City Offers Appliance Incentives.

Springville City will give incentives to residential customers who buy energy efficient appliances and light fixtures. Springville’s Home Energy Savings Program will give customers cash back for purchasing qualified appliances, including ENERGY STAR clothes washers, refrigerators, dishwashers, room air conditioners, lighting fixtures, and ceiling fans, as well as qualifying electric water heaters. Rebates range from $20 to $75, and will be available regardless of who installs the product, but must be purchased at a participating retailer.

In addition to receiving the incentive, customers who use energy efficient appliances can also substantially reduce the amount of electricity and water they use. For example, ENERGY STAR washers use 40-percent less electricity and water each year, and refrigerators use about half as much energy as older models—plus, they keep food fresher longer. Participating in the Home Energy Savings Program is simple. For more information about how to get your incentive, qualifying appliances, purchase locations, and other details, please visit www.smartenergy.uamps.com, or call (888) 365-1558. “We’re always looking for ways to make electricity more reliable and affordable for our customers,” said Leon Fredrickson, Director of the Springville City Electric Department. “Thanks to our City Council approving the Home Energy Savings Plan, our customers have one more way to pitch in and help us meet this goal.”
